THE HOSPITAL IS WORKING AND STANDING FOR LIFE!

“Ohmatdyt” is the biggest children’s hospital in Ukraine. Since 1894, the institution has been constantly saving lives. In peacetime, Okhmatdyt performs more than 10,000 surgeries a year. In total, the hospital has 720 hospital beds and treats more than 20,000 people annually.

However, in the middle of the night on February 24, Russia treacherously broke-in the territory of our state from various directions. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have been staying under shell bombing and air strikes for a week now. The patients and the team of Okhmatdyt Hospital are among them.

Now, seriously sick children stay in the basements, women give birth in the shelters, and doctors work 24/7. Before the war, Okhmatdyt Hospital was a medical institution №1. In 80 departments, we to provide medical care to children with a variety of problems: oncology, rare diseases, injuries and kidney failure, genetic diseases such as SMA. We were one of the first in the country to do bone marrow transplants from unrelated donors, as well as organ transplants, including kidney transplants from posthumous donors. In collaboartion with the government we launched aerodynamic evacuation, which means that we delivered patients in critical condition from remote corners of our country. There worked a peretinal concilium at Ohmadydt which dealt with the most complicated cases of pregnancy in all the regions. Even during the prenatal period we made a plan for a child’s treatment which we implemented from the first seconds of life. We welcomed hundreds of premature babies to the world and helped them save their fragile lives. A lot of adult and healthy Ukrainians is the result of our work! Neurooncological Ukrainian concilium implied All Under The Roof practce and cooperated with the top doctors in the world in order to stop cancer being the doom.

Our doctors and staff have devoted themselves to their work in order to every Ukrainian child to get world-class medical care at home in Ukraine.

All our plans were destroyed and canceled by the war. Now we are on duty in the wards where the children are on life support devices – they cannot be transported to the bomb shelter. We are hiding from air raid sirens and explosions, performing extremely complex surgeries in makeshift operating rooms in basements. As before, we are saving lives. Only now ambulances are bringing us children and adults who were happy and healthy a week ago. Today they are dying from bomb shelling by the Russian army.

We appeal to the whole world community for help. At this critical time, we are doing even more than we can. But when we are being cynically bomb shelled, the lives of children and women in labor are being taken (as was the case with the missile strikes in Kharkiv), we need your support. More than 10 injured people who suffered from the fire and rocket attacks were brought to our hospital in the first 7 days. 2 children died. Our hospital got into fire also, 3 enemy bullets hit one of the hospital building. Everyone who was there managed to stay safe and sound. Seriously sick children altogether with their parents have to hide in the basements of the hospital because of the attacks. Our doctors are continuing to provide all the necessary medical help and accept all the adults, who have suffered because of the war.

It is the reaction of the world community that will determine whose side the truth is on. Help us to save the lives of Ukrainians who are being destroyed by the Russian army.

Because of the war, OKHMADYT’s seriously ill patients are forced to hide from Russian attacks in the basement of the hospital.
OKHMATDYT specialists are in the hospital around the clock, providing all necessary medical care, while volunteers bring food, water and essentials.
Basements instead of hospital rooms. Many days in a row, patients have been here, hiding from enemy shelling. Among them are children with orphan diseases, patients after neurosurgery, children with oncology, newborns. Previously, they all were in hospital wards with appropriate conditions.
