A scientific and practical conference, “Craniofacial Surgery in Children: Prospects for Development in Ukraine,” was held at the National Children’s Specialized Hospital “Okhmatdyt” — the first professional platform in Ukraine dedicated to a comprehensive discussion of modern approaches to treating craniofacial pathology in children.
Specialists presented clinical experience, new surgical solutions, and outlined the priorities for the development of this highly specialized field.
Conference focus areas included:
- Surgery and Intensive Care — surgical strategies for syndromic craniosynostoses, anesthesiology support, and multidisciplinary patient management.
- ICP Management — intracranial pressure monitoring and treatment of children with scaphocephaly.
- Respiration and Sleep — the role of neurologists, otolaryngologists, and sleep laboratories; polysomnography and non-invasive ventilation.
- Oral and Dental Management — facial bone distraction, genetic aspects, and the use of 3D technologies in maxillofacial surgery.
- Cognitive and Psychological Support — psychological and speech therapy guidance, supporting cognitive development.
A special guest was Professor Roman H. Khonsari, a leading maxillofacial surgeon at the French National Reference Center for Craniofacial Malformations (CRANIOST), who has been collaborating closely with Okhmatdyt physicians for three years.
The conference brought together leading Ukrainian neurosurgeons, maxillofacial surgeons, anesthesiologists, geneticists, orthodontists, otolaryngologists, ophthalmologists, neurologists, speech therapists, and psychologists.
Craniofacial pathology requires staged treatment and long-term follow-up, making a multidisciplinary approach and continuous exchange of experience with international colleagues essential. This is how a modern system of care for children with complex developmental disorders is being formed.
We thank all participants and partners for their professional dialogue and collaborative efforts on behalf of our patients.
